Author Guidelines

Jurnal Vokasi Indonesia (JVI) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, multidisciplinary scholarly journal published by the Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia. JVI welcomes original research that contributes to the advancement of applied knowledge, professional practices, technological innovation, and evidence-based solutions to contemporary challenges in industry, public services, and society.

Authors are required to prepare manuscripts in accordance with the following guidelines. All submissions must demonstrate originality, scientific rigor, methodological transparency, and relevance to the journal's Aims and Scope.

1. Manuscript Types

JVI primarily accepts the following manuscript type:

Original Research Articles

Original Research Articles present original findings obtained through systematic scientific investigation. Manuscripts should demonstrate a clear research problem, appropriate theoretical or conceptual foundations, rigorous methodology, credible findings, and significant scholarly or practical contributions.

Accepted research approaches may include:

  • Quantitative research, including surveys, experiments, statistical modeling, and other empirical approaches.
  • Qualitative research, including interviews, observations, case studies, document analysis, and other systematic qualitative approaches.
  • Mixed-methods research integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence.
  • Applied evaluative and design-oriented research involving the development, implementation, or assessment of models, systems, interventions, or professional practices.
  • Conceptual-evaluative research supported by systematic analytical methods, appropriate evidence, and a demonstrable original contribution.

Other manuscript categories, such as review articles or conceptual papers without an empirical component, may be considered only when explicitly permitted by the Editorial Board.

All manuscripts must fall within the journal's declared multidisciplinary applied research scope.

2. General Submission Requirements

Before submitting a manuscript, authors must ensure that:

  • The manuscript represents original scholarly work.
  • The manuscript has not been previously published and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • The research topic is relevant to the journal's Aims and Scope.
  • All authors have approved the manuscript and agreed to its submission.
  • All sources are properly cited and acknowledged.
  • Research ethics requirements have been satisfied where applicable.
  • All figures, tables, and supplementary materials are appropriately prepared.
  • The manuscript follows the required structure and formatting.
  • Any conflicts of interest and funding sources are disclosed.

Manuscripts that do not satisfy the journal's submission requirements may be returned to the authors for correction or declined during the initial editorial screening.

3. Manuscript Preparation and Formatting

Manuscripts should be prepared using Microsoft Word or another compatible word-processing application.

For initial submission, authors are encouraged to prepare a clearly structured manuscript using a single-column layout to facilitate editorial assessment and peer review.

The final published version will be formatted according to the JVI publication layout, as illustrated in the journal's published articles.

3.1. General Formatting

  • Paper size: A4 (210 x 297 mm).
  • Font family: Times New Roman.
  • Main text: 10-point font in the final publication layout.
  • Article title: 14-point font, bold, uppercase, and centered in the final publication layout.
  • Author names and affiliations: Clearly presented beneath the article title.
  • Text alignment: Justified.
  • Page layout: Single-column format for initial submission; final publication layout prepared according to JVI's editorial format.
  • Headings: Clearly distinguished using consistent capitalization, bold formatting, and hierarchical structure.
  • Tables and figures: Numbered consecutively and positioned near their first mention whenever practical.
  • References: Prepared consistently using an author-date citation system, following the journal's prescribed reference style.

Authors should avoid unnecessary formatting, excessive use of decorative elements, and inconsistent fonts or heading styles.

3.2. Language

Manuscripts should be written in clear, grammatically correct academic English, unless Indonesian-language submissions are expressly permitted by the Editorial Board.

Authors are responsible for ensuring the quality and accuracy of language, terminology, and scholarly expression before submission.

The published article format includes an English abstract (Abstract) and an Indonesian abstract (Abstrak). Authors should provide both versions when required by the journal.

3.3. Article Length

Manuscripts should be sufficiently detailed to present the research problem, theoretical or conceptual foundations, methodology, findings, discussion, and conclusions.

Authors should avoid unnecessary repetition and ensure that the manuscript length is proportionate to the complexity and contribution of the research.

4. Manuscript Structure

Original Research Articles should generally contain the following components:

4.1. Article Title

The title should accurately reflect the content, objectives, and main focus of the research. It should be clear, informative, concise, and free from unnecessary abbreviations.

4.2. Author Names and Affiliations

The manuscript must include the full names of all authors, their institutional affiliations, and the email address of the corresponding author.

Affiliations should identify the relevant institution, department or academic unit, and country where appropriate.

The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the editorial office throughout submission, review, and publication.

4.3. Abstract and Abstrak

The abstract should provide a concise and self-contained summary of the research, covering:

  • Research background or problem.
  • Research objectives.
  • Research design and methodology.
  • Principal findings.
  • Conclusions and scholarly or practical implications.

Abstracts should accurately reflect the manuscript and avoid unsupported conclusions.

The English Abstract and Indonesian Abstrak should communicate equivalent research information.

Authors should avoid citations, unexplained abbreviations, and unnecessary technical detail in the abstract.

4.4. Keywords and Kata Kunci

Authors should provide approximately three to five keywords that describe the principal concepts, methods, or areas of the research.

Keywords should be specific and relevant to the manuscript to support indexing and discoverability.

English keywords should be accompanied by corresponding Indonesian keywords where bilingual abstracts are required.

4.5. Introduction

The Introduction should establish the research context and explain the significance of the problem being investigated.

This section should normally include:

  • Background and context of the research.
  • Identification of the research problem.
  • Relevant previous studies and the current state of knowledge.
  • Research gaps and justification for the study.
  • Research objectives or questions.
  • Originality and expected contributions.

Authors should clearly explain why the research is necessary and how it contributes to existing knowledge or professional practice.

4.6. Literature Review

The Literature Review should provide a critical synthesis of relevant theories, concepts, previous empirical findings, and analytical frameworks.

Rather than merely summarizing earlier publications, authors should identify relevant relationships, inconsistencies, limitations, and research opportunities.

Where appropriate, the section may include hypotheses, a conceptual framework, or an analytical model.

The Literature Review may be integrated into the Introduction when appropriate to the research design and approved article structure.

4.7. Methodology

The Methodology section must describe the research design and procedures clearly enough to permit appropriate scholarly evaluation.

Depending on the research approach, this section should address relevant aspects such as:

  • Research design and approach.
  • Study setting and research period.
  • Population, sampling strategy, and participants, where applicable.
  • Data sources and data collection procedures.
  • Research instruments, variables, or analytical categories.
  • Data analysis methods.
  • Validity, reliability, trustworthiness, or other quality assurance procedures.
  • Relevant ethical approvals, participant consent, or institutional permissions.

Authors must explain the suitability of the selected methodology for answering the research questions.

4.8. Results and Discussion

The Results section should present the research findings logically, clearly, and accurately.

Tables, figures, statistical outputs, qualitative themes, or other forms of evidence may be used when relevant.

The Discussion should interpret the findings in relation to the research objectives, previous literature, relevant theories, and practical implications.

Authors are encouraged to explain:

  • The main meaning and significance of the findings.
  • Relationships between the findings and previous research.
  • Theoretical or conceptual contributions.
  • Practical, professional, institutional, or policy implications.
  • Relevant limitations and alternative interpretations.

Results and Discussion may be presented as a combined section or as separate sections, depending on the research design and manuscript structure.

4.9. Conclusion

The Conclusion should summarize the principal findings and answer the research objectives or questions.

It should highlight the contribution of the research without simply repeating the abstract or discussion.

Where appropriate, authors may include practical recommendations, research limitations, and suggestions for future research.

Conclusions must be supported by the evidence presented in the manuscript.

4.10. References

All works cited in the manuscript must be included in the reference list. The reference list must not contain sources that are not cited in the text.

Authors are responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of all references.

5. Tables, Figures, and Equations

5.1. Tables

  • Tables must be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance.
  • Each table must have a clear and informative title.
  • Tables must be referred to in the main text.
  • Column headings, units, and abbreviations must be clearly identified.
  • Sources and explanatory notes should be provided where necessary.
  • Tables should be editable whenever practical.

Example: Table 1. Characteristics of Research Respondents

5.2. Figures

  • Figures must be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance.

Mathematical equations should be clearly presented using an appropriate equation editor.

Important equations should be numbered sequentially, and all variables, symbols, and parameters should be defined when first introduced.

6. Citations and Reference Style

JVI uses an author-date citation approach. Authors should prepare references consistently using an established author-date reference style, with APA style recommended for standardization.

In-text citations should clearly identify the authors and publication year.

Examples of in-text citations:

  • Single author: (Smith, 2023).
  • Two authors: (Smith & Jones, 2023).
  • Three or more authors: (Smith et al., 2023).
  • Narrative citation: Smith and Jones (2023) examined the relationship.

Example of a journal article reference:

Smith, J. A., & Jones, B. C. (2023). Title of the research article. Journal Title, 12(2), 100-115. https://doi.org/xx.xxxx/xxxxx

The example above is illustrative and does not represent an actual publication.

Authors should ensure that:

  • All references are complete and accurate.
  • In-text citations correspond to the reference list.
  • Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are provided where available.
  • Reference entries follow a consistent format.
  • Sources are academically relevant and appropriate to the research.
  • References reflect the scholarly foundations and current developments relevant to the research topic.

Authors are encouraged to use reference management software such as Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote.

Authorship must reflect genuine scholarly contributions to the research and manuscript.

All listed authors should satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Make a substantial contribution to the conception, design, data collection, analysis, or interpretation of the research.
  2. Participate in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.
  3. Approve the final version of the manuscript submitted for publication.
  4. Agree to be accountable for their contributions and support the integrity of the published work.

The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors approve the manuscript, agree to the authorship order, and consent to submission.

Individuals who contribute to the research but do not meet the authorship criteria should be acknowledged appropriately.

Guest authorship, gift authorship, and ghost authorship are not permitted.

Requests to change authorship after submission must be justified and supported by agreement from all affected authors.

8. Research Ethics and Publication Integrity

All submitted manuscripts must comply with the journal's Publication Ethics and relevant institutional or national research ethics requirements.

Authors must ensure that:

  • Research data and findings are accurately reported.
  • No plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate manipulation is involved.
  • Research involving human participants has obtained ethical approval when required.
  • Informed consent and confidentiality requirements are satisfied where applicable.
  • Necessary permissions have been obtained for the use of confidential institutional or organizational data.
  • Potential conflicts of interest and relevant funding sources are disclosed.
  • Substantive use of generative AI is appropriately disclosed in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policy.

Manuscripts may undergo similarity screening and additional editorial assessment when research integrity concerns arise.

9. Required Author Declarations

Authors should provide the following information when relevant to their study:

9.1. Funding Statement

Identify the organizations or institutions providing financial support, including relevant grant numbers where applicable. If the research received no external financial support, authors should state this clearly.
