Abstract
This study aims to evaluate factors associated with community participation in Waste Bank activities and waste management behavior, while exploring the potential role of doorstepping interventions to improve community engagementThis study was conducted in South Jakarta, a densely populated area with a large volume of daily waste. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was used. The study involved guided interviews with 201 respondents who were customers of Gesit Main Waste Bank. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the influence of independent variables on waste management behavior as the dependent variable. The results showed that 42.8% of respondents had been waste bank customers for less than one year, 30.3% had participated for between one and three years, and 26.9% had participated for more than three years. Participation was primarily driven by waste bank officers (58.2%) and local government (30.8%). Only 31.8% of the respondents participated in socialization activities. Knowledge and skills were significantly associated with participation (p < 0.05). The odds ratio (OR) for knowledge was 2.371, indicating that respondents with more knowledge were 2.37 times more likely to participate. Skills and beliefs showed stronger associations with participation, with an OR of 11.386, indicating that respondents with higher belief scores were more likely to demonstrate active waste management behavior. Conversely, the attitude-behavior gap had a negative influence (OR=0.455), indicating that individuals with inconsistent attitudes were less likely to participate in the study. This study shows that improving community knowledge and skills is crucial to encourage active participation in waste management, while government and waste bank officers’ support is crucial to creating awareness and motivation. From a policy perspective, given their significant influence, these findings suggest a strategy of targeted educational programs and skills-building workshops, followed by capacity building for waste bank officers. Finally, local governments must strengthen support through clearer policies and better facilities.
