Abstract
Flies are synanthropic insects of public health importance commonly found at trash disposal sites (TDS). Poor waste management promotes fly breeding, increases the risk of disease transmission, reflects low sanitation, and serves as an environmental bioindicator. Studies on flies at TDS in university campus environments in West Java, Indonesia, remain limited, particularly with respect to species composition, fly density, and the use of different density measurement methods. Fly density monitoring in Indonesia still relies on the fly grill method under Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023, although alternative tools, such as fly spot cards and fly sticky paper are available. This study aimed to identify fly species, compare fly density measurements using different tools, and evaluate their field applicability. The study was conducted from March to August 2024 at a university’s trash disposal sites in West Java, Indonesia. Flies were collected once at each TDS using a sweep net and identified macroscopically based on body structure. Fly density was measured using a fly grill, fly spot cards, and fly sticky study. The Shannon – Wiener diversity index (H′), dominance, relative abundance, and Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze data. A total of 188 flies representing four species were identified, dominated by Chrysomya megacephala (87.23%), followed by Musca domestica (5.90%), Sarcophaga littoralis (0.18%), and Musca bezzi (0.04%). The species diversity was low (H′ = 0.46), largely due to the dominance of C. megacephala, which is associated with organic waste, such as food residues. The Spearman test revealed a strong positive correlation among the three tools (rs = 0.9; p < 0.05), indicating that fly spot cards and fly sticky paper are practical alternatives to the fly grill method while also providing baseline information on fly diversity at university TDS and supporting the development of environmental sanitation and waste management programs.
