Abstract
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 emphasizes the role of cities in providing safe, inclusive, and accessible green public spaces. Therefore, this study investigates the participation process in revitalizing a public space through the perspectives of various stakeholders, including religious, cultural, women, and youth leaders, on the revitalization of historical public spaces in Indonesia. A focus group discussion was conducted to capture stakeholder insights on the design of public space in Pariaman City, West Sumatra. Thematic analysis identified eight key themes relating to the design of Lapangan Merdeka and plans for revitalization. Participants emphasized the potential to evolve into a vibrant, multifunctional public space, serving both recreational purposes and as a platform for enhancing the city’s cultural and historical identity. Sustained collaboration is also important among religious, cultural, women, and youth leaders as local typical stakeholders to achieve the intended goals of the public space. This study highlights the discussion as a crucial initial state of the project, serving as a basis for a well-planned participatory approach of the public space revitalization. Emphasizing accessibility and zoning of the square for different purposes, appointing a dedicated manager responsible for the maintenance and care of existing facilities, as well as engaging the community in the planning and development of the space.
