Publication Ethics Statement

Journal of Middle East and Islamic Studies (MEIS) is a peer-reviewed journal published per semester (January – June and July – December) by the University of Indonesia and managed by the Middle East and Islamic Regional Study Program, School of Strategic and Global Studies. In the publication process, all aspects related to publication ethics in this journal refer to the Regulation of the Head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Number 5 of 2014 concerning the Code of Ethics for Scientific Publications, which originates from the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE). This Publication Ethics Statement explains the duties, responsibilities and ethics of all parties involved in the process of publishing articles in this journal as follows:

Editor
An editor is someone who coordinates the roles and functions of authors, reviewers and journal managers in the process of publishing articles based on scientific and ethical principles. In more detail, the duties, responsibilities and ethics of an editor are as follows:

  1. Accommodate the needs of readers and authors
  2. Strive to improve the quality of publications in a sustainable manner
  3. Implement a process to ensure the quality of published articles
  4. Prioritize freedom of opinion objectively
  5. Maintain the integrity of the author's academic track record
  6. Deliver corrections, clarifications, withdrawals, and apologies to the author if necessary
  7. Responsible for the style and format of the written work, while the contents and all written statements are the responsibility of the author
  8. Actively solicit the opinions of authors, readers, reviewers, and members of the editorial board to improve the quality of publications
  9. Encouraging an assessment of the journal if there are findings
  10. Encouraging initiatives to reduce research and publication errors by asking authors to attach an Ethical Clearance form that the Ethics Clearance Commission has approved
  11. Support initiatives to educate researchers on publication ethics
  12. Examine the effect of publication policies on the attitudes of authors and reviewers and improve them to increase responsibility and reduce errors
  13. Have an open mind to new opinions or other people's views that may conflict with personal statements
  14. Does not defend own opinion, author, or third party, which may result in a subjective decision
  15. Editors are encouraging authors to be able to make improvements to their written work so that it is worthy of publication

Reviewers
Reviewers help the editor critically examine the substance of scientific papers according to their area of expertise. In more detail, the duties, responsibilities and ethics of a reviewers are as follows:

  1. Receive assignments from the editor to review articles and submit written articles as a result of the review to the editor as material for determining the eligibility of the article for publication
  2. Reviewers will review the article according to the style of the publication based on scientific principles (data collection methods, author legality, conclusions, etc.)
  3. Reviewers will review articles that have been corrected according to predetermined standards
  4. Encouraging authors to make improvements to article by providing criticism and suggestions
  5. Maintain the privacy of the author by not distributing the results of corrections
  6. It is not permissible to review article involving himself, either directly or indirectly.

Author
The author expresses the results of his thoughts and research, and development in writing that meets the requirements of scientific and ethical principles. In more detail, the duties, responsibilities, and ethics of an author are as follows:

  1. The author must ensure that he meets all the criteria as an author
  2. The author is collectively responsible for the work and content of the article including methods, analysis, calculations and details
  3. The author states the origin of the resources (including funding) either directly or indirectly
  4. The author explains the limitations of the research
  5. The author immediately responds to comments made by reviewers in a professional and timely manner
  6. The author must inform the editor if he wants to withdraw the article
  7. The author must respect if there is a publisher's request not to publish the findings in the form of interviews or through other publication media before being published by the publisher
  8. The author informs the editor about (some) articles in a multidisciplinary, multi-perspective study.

Other matters related to publication ethics in this journal refer to the Regulation of the Head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Number 5 of 2014 concerning the Code of Ethics for Scientific Publications.
