Aims & Scope

The Journal of Middle East and Islamic Studies (MEIS) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal published by the Graduate School of Sustainable Development (GSSD), Universitas Indonesia. MEIS aims to deepen the understanding of the Middle East and the Muslim world through multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, with particular attention to Islamic perspectives and to their relevance for Indonesia and other Muslim-majority countries.

Focus Areas

MEIS publishes original research, review articles, and conceptual papers in four focus areas:

1. Islamic Economics, Finance, and the Halal Industry

Islamic banking and finance, zakat, waqf, and Islamic social finance; Sharia compliance, governance, and risk management; the halal industry, including halal certification, halal supply chains, and halal financing; Islamic economic thought and the economic relations of Muslim-majority countries.

2. Politics, International Relations, and Security of the Middle East

Politics and foreign policy of Middle Eastern states; regional conflicts, diplomacy, and security; the role of major powers and international institutions in the region; energy politics and economic relations; religion, legitimacy, and political change; women and political participation.

3. Islamic Studies: Law, Thought, and Education

Islamic law (fiqh, uṣūl al-fiqh, qawāʿid al-fiqh, and maqāṣid al-sharīʿa) and its application in contemporary contexts; Islamic political and intellectual thought; Islamic education and religious movements.

4. Islamic Psychology, Society, and Digital Culture

Islamic psychology and religious experience; religion, identity, and social change in Muslim societies; gender and women’s agency; media, discourse, and digital religion, including the impact of new technologies on religious narratives.

Methods and Submissions

MEIS welcomes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research, as well as legal-textual analysis, discourse analysis, bibliometric studies, and comparative research. Submissions should make a clear scholarly contribution and engage with international literature. Manuscripts outside these focus areas may be returned without review.
