Editorial Policies

Editorial and Peer-Review Process

The editorial and peer-review process at Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia (JKI) is structured to guarantee that every published manuscript adheres to high standards of scientific quality, methodological rigour, ethical integrity, and relevance to nursing science. The process consists of the following stages:

Initial Check

Upon submission, every manuscript undergoes an initial screening conducted by the Administration Staff. This stage aims to identify any technical or administrative issues before the manuscript enters the editorial evaluation process. The Administration Staff will assess:

  • Compliance with the journal template;
  • Completeness of all required submission files;
  • Compliance with the journal's editorial policies;
  • Compliance with publication ethics requirements (e.g. ethics approval, trial registration number, informed consent statements, and conflict of interest disclosures);
  • Compliance with appropriate reporting guidelines (e.g., CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA, COREQ, SRQR, CARE, etc.).

⚠️ Note: If any required information or documents are missing, the manuscript will be returned to the corresponding author for correction before further processing. Only manuscripts that successfully pass the initial check will proceed to the Editorial Evaluation stage.

Editorial Evaluation

The Editor-in-Chief (EiC) performs an initial scientific assessment of the manuscript to determine its suitability. During this stage, the EiC evaluates:

  • Relevance to the journal's scope;
  • Scientific novelty and significance;
  • Overall quality of the manuscript;
  • Adequacy of the study design and reporting.

At this stage, the manuscript may be rejected if it is considered unsuitable for the journal, or advanced to the next stage for further editorial processing. For manuscripts requiring substantial redevelopment before reconsideration, the authors may be invited to revise the manuscript and upload it as a new submission.

Administrative Review

Manuscripts that pass the editorial evaluation undergo an administrative review conducted by the Administration Staff. This stage includes:

  • Similarity checking using plagiarism detection software. The journal uses plagiarism tools (Turnitin) to ensure the integrity of all submitted manuscripts;
  • Verification that the manuscript complies with the journal's administrative and technical requirements;
  • Final preparation before entering the peer-review process.

Once completed, the Editor-in-Chief assigns the manuscript to a Section Editor (SE) whose expertise best matches the manuscript's subject area.

Editorial Review

The assigned Section Editor conducts a second editorial assessment focusing on the manuscript's scientific merit promptly before assigning reviewers. The Section Editor will evaluate:

  • Originality and contribution to the field;
  • Scientific rigor;
  • Adequacy of methodology and reporting;
  • Overall readiness for external peer review.

If the manuscript meets the journal's standards, the Section Editor invites qualified reviewers with relevant expertise to conduct the peer review.

Peer Review

JKI employs a double-blind peer-review process, in which both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the review. The submitted manuscript will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers selected based on their expertise to ensure a fair, objective, and high-quality evaluation.

Reviewers provide scientific comments to improve the manuscript’s contents. Occasionally, a third reviewer is required to provide critical comments on the submitted manuscripts.

⚠️ Note: This stage is generally the most time-consuming because it depends on reviewer availability. Reviewers are typically given three weeks to complete their evaluations.

The Administration Staff sends regular reminders and follows up weekly to facilitate a timely review process.

Editorial Decision

After receiving the reviewers' reports, the Section Editor evaluates all comments and recommendations before making an editorial decision. The decision, together with the anonymous reviewer comments, will be communicated to the corresponding author. Possible editorial decisions include:

  • Accept
  • Minor Revision
  • Major Revision
  • Reject

⚠️ Note: Submission of a revised manuscript does not guarantee acceptance for publication.

Revision

Authors receiving a revision decision are expected to submit a revised manuscript within the specified timeframe: 1 week for Minor Revision, and 2 weeks for Major Revision. Extensions may be granted upon request for up to 30 days.

Second Round of Peer Review

Manuscripts requiring major revision are generally returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation. Reviewers assess whether all previous comments have been adequately addressed and whether the manuscript now meets the journal's publication standards. The second-round review is typically completed within two weeks. Additional rounds of revision and peer review may be required if substantial issues remain unresolved.

Final Editorial Decision

Following the completion of peer review, the Section Editor performs a final evaluation of the revised manuscript. Additional editorial comments may be provided if necessary before the final recommendation is submitted to the Editor-in-Chief. The final editorial decision is then communicated to the authors.

Production Process

After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, it enters the production stage. The Journal Manager will:

  • Inform the author about the Article Processing Charge (APC);
  • Coordinate regarding the professional proofreading services (proofreading fees are separate from the APC);
  • Coordinate regarding the copyediting process;
  • Prepare the manuscript for publication, including layout editing and final production.

Authors may be contacted during this stage to seek clarification or approval before publication.

⚠️ Note: JKI currently collaborates with Scribendi and Cambridge Proofreading Services as its preferred proofreading providers. However, authors are free to use any professional English proofreading service that best suits their needs and budget.

Please note that proofreading fees may be paid after the copyediting stage. To avoid delays in the publication process, JKI will initially coordinate and process the proofreading on the authors' behalf, while payment can be settled subsequently.

Screening for Plagiarism

Papers submitted to Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia (JKI) will be screened for plagiarism using Turnitin plagiarism detection tools. JKI will immediately reject papers containing plagiarism or self-plagiarism.

Prior to submission to reviewers, articles undergo a similarity and plagiarism check performed by an editorial team member. Submissions to JKI must exhibit a similarity score no greater than 15%.

Open Access Policy

This journal is an open‑access publication that offers unrestricted, worldwide access to the complete text of every article it publishes. No fees are charged to readers or their institutions for accessing the content. Readers have the right to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of all articles in Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia.

Data Availability

In alignment with the guidelines established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia requires authors to include a Data Availability Statement in their manuscript.

This statement must clarify whether the underlying data supporting the study's findings are accessible to the public. To ensure transparency:

  • If the data are available: Authors must provide details on how to access them, including relevant links, public repositories, DOIs, or accession numbers.
  • If the data cannot be shared publicly: (e.g., due to ethical, legal, or privacy restrictions involving sensitive patient information), authors must explicitly explain these restrictions and specify the conditions under which access might be granted upon reasonable request.

Article Withdrawal

Any manuscript withdrawn from the peer-review or publication process requires the submission of an official Article Withdrawal Letter. This letter must state the explicit reasons for the withdrawal and must be signed by the corresponding author and all listed co-authors.

To compensate for the significant administrative resources, time, and labor invested by the editorial team in processing the manuscript, the following financial conditions are incurred:

  • Withdrawal During Peer Review: A withdrawal fee equivalent to 50% of the standard Article Processing Charge (APC) will be levied.
  • Withdrawal Post-Acceptance: If a withdrawal is requested after the manuscript has been formally accepted for publication, the author must pay 100% of the APC.
  • For manuscripts that have already completed the final processing and publication steps, any publication fees previously paid are strictly non-refundable. The formal withdrawal of a manuscript will only be processed and finalized once the applicable withdrawal fee has been settled in full.

Failure to comply with these withdrawal terms or a refusal to pay the required fee will result in the author(s) and their accompanying institutional affiliation being barred from future submissions to Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia. Additionally, the journal reserves the right to retract or remove the authors' previously published works from the online repository.
