Abstract

The increasing frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones driven by climate change pose growing threats to food and nutrition security. Globally, an estimated 80–90 tropical cyclones occur annually, affecting approximately 119 million people. Evidence regarding their impact on food systems, dietary patterns, and nutritional status remains fragmented. This scoping review aimed to map global evidence on the impacts of tropical cyclones on food and nutrition security, identify key pathways of impact, and examine affected indicators at household and individual levels. The review followed Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and PRISMA-ScR. Searches were conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025. Eligible studies reported food security, dietary, or nutritional outcomes following cyclone events. Data were extracted and thematic analysis identified common impact pathways. Twelve studies from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the United States were included. Tropical cyclones were associated with reduced food availability and access, damage to water and sanitation systems, declining household income, increased reliance on food aid, and reduced dietary diversity. Reported nutrition outcomes included low mid-upper arm circumference and body mass index among women and children, as well as elevated rates of stunting and underweight. Governance challenges and social inequalities further exacerbated food and nutrition insecurity. Overall, tropical cyclones undermine food and nutrition security through interconnected environmental, economic, and social pathways, highlighting the need for climate-resilient food systems and nutrition-sensitive disaster responses.

Bahasa Abstract

Peningkatan frekuensi dan intensitas siklon tropis akibat perubahan iklim mengancam ketahanan pangan dan gizi. Secara global, diperkirakan 80–90 siklon tropis terjadi setiap tahun, mempengaruhi sekitar 119 juta orang. Bukti mengenai dampaknya terhadap sistem pangan, pola konsumsi, dan status gizi masih terfragmentasi.Tinjauan pelingkupan ini bertujuan untuk memetakan bukti global mengenai dampak siklon tropis terhadap ketahanan pangan dan gizi, mengidentifikasi jalur dampak utama, serta mengkaji indikator yang terdampak pada tingkat rumah tangga dan individu. Tinjauan ini mengikuti pedoman Joanna Briggs Institute dan kerangka PRISMA-ScR. Pencarian literatur dilakukan pada PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, dan Google Scholar untuk artikel yang ditelaah sejawat dan diterbitkan antara tahun 2015 hingga 2025. Studi yang memenuhi kriteria melaporkan luaran terkait ketahanan pangan, pola makan, atau status gizi pasca kejadian siklon. Data diekstraksi dan analisis tematik digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi pola dampak utama. Sebanyak dua belas studi dari Asia, Afrika, Karibia, Pasifik, dan Amerika Serikat disertakan. Siklon tropis dikaitkan dengan penurunan ketersediaan dan akses pangan, kerusakan sistem air dan sanitasi, penurunan pendapatan rumah tangga, peningkatan ketergantungan pada bantuan pangan, serta berkurangnya keragaman konsumsi pangan. Luaran gizi yang dilaporkan meliputi rendahnya lingkar lengan atas dan indeks massa tubuh pada perempuan dan anak, serta peningkatan kejadian stunting dan berat badan kurang. Tantangan tata kelola dan ketimpangan sosial semakin memperburuk kerawanan pangan dan gizi. Secara keseluruhan, siklon tropis melemahkan ketahanan pangan dan gizi melalui jalur lingkungan, ekonomi, dan sosial yang saling terkait, menegaskan perlunya sistem pangan yang tangguh terhadap iklim serta respons kebencanaan yang sensitif terhadap gizi.
