Abstract
Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oxygen-releasing formula (ORF) as an adjunct in the non-surgical management of periodontal abscess in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methods: This split-mouth clinical trial was conducted on 14 patients with periodontal abscess with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), who were divided into a control group, nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) alone, and a test group (NSPT+ORF). Parameters such as Landry's healing index (HI) were evaluated at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month. Probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding on probing presence or absence (BOP) were evaluated at baseline and 1 month.
Results: There was statistical significance at one week in the test group in HI and BOP, but at 1 month, there was no statistical significance between the test and control groups. Mean PPD reduction and mean CAL gain were greater in the test group than in the control group at 1 month.
Conclusion: Adjunctive use of ORF with non-surgical periodontal therapy showed promising improvements in early periodontal healing and clinical parameters in patients with T2DM. However, given the limited follow-up duration and the absence of significant intergroup differences for most outcomes, further well-designed studies are required to establish its clinical benefit.
