Abstract

Indonesia has a serious waste problem, which ranking second in marine pollution. Due to significant environmental impacts, a solution to overcome the complexity of waste problems is needed. This study took sample on waste management in Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (JIEP). JIEP is an Industrial area which covers 443 hectares of land in East Jakarta. This study aims to address Indonesia's serious waste problem by exploring the potential utilization of waste in the Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (JIEP) as Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) for a waste-to-energy (WtE) power plant. The proposed method used a steam power plant with RDF as fuel which is directly injected into the boiler. The energy system configuration is simulated using HOMER Pro, based on the selected electricity demand of 1.9 MW from one industry which operates in JIEP Area, PT Kemas Indah Maju. The simulation results indicate that the demand can be met by a 2 MW steam power plant, with a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of $ 0.79/kWh. Furthermore, three other steam power plant capacity scenario, 50 MW, 330 MW, and 500 MW, were simulated for financial sensitivity analysis and finding optimal capacity based on the LCOE. The findings suggest that as the plant capacity increases, the LCOE decreases. At a capacity of 500 MW, the LCOE is reduced to $ 0.09/kWh which is comparable to the Indonesia’s National Electricity Company price. Based on these results, this study concludes that the development of a waste-to-energy power plant requires a minimum capacity of at least 500 MW to achieve economic feasibility
