Abstract
This research is a semiotic study of visual communication that is analyzing the meaning of signs or symbols in the world beauty contest. The beauty pageant itself has become a spectacle event that attracts millions of viewers when beautiful woman who represents her country walks gracefully on the world-class stage. Behind this phenomenal competition, there are no many people realize that there are various communication symbols that delivers by the participants, both verbal and non-verbal, especially in the semiotics topic. By using the method of studying literature on the study of semiotics, in the world beauty contests, the expected meaning will be seen. Beauty contests, both at home and abroad, always receive special attention in various media. If examined more deeply in the context of semiotic communication, the research results from this paper are expected to create perceptions and views about reality that are implemented by words and other signs that can be used in visual communication. The practical implication is how the sign of human perception does more than just reflect the existing reality, because the tradition of semiotics itself covers the theory of how signs represent objects, ideas, situations, circumstances, feelings, and so on. In this research, Miss Universe and Miss World taken as represent beauty pageant, because these are the two oldest beauty events in the world.
Bahasa Abstract
Penelitian ini merupakan kajian semiotik komunikasi visual yang bertujuan membahas keberadaan makna tanda atau simbol di kontes kecantikan dunia (world beauty peagant). Kontes kecantikan sendiri telah menjadi tontotan yang menarik jutaan mata penonton saat wanita cantik yang mewakili negaranya berjalan anggun di panggung kelas dunia. Dibalik kompetisi fenomenal tersebut, tidak banyak yang mengetahui ada makna komunikasi yang tersirat dari berbagai simbol komunikasi para pesertanya baik verbal maupun non verbal, terlebih dalam pembahasan semiotika. Dengan menggunakan metode studi kajian literatur mengenai tanda pada kajian semiotika, di kontes kecantikan dunia, maka makna yang tersirat diharapkan akan terlihat. Kontes kecantikan, baik dalam maupun luar negeri selalu mendapat perhatian khusus di berbagai media. Jika dikupas lebih mendalam dalam konteks komunikasi semiotik, hasil penelitian dari tulisan ini diharapkan bisa menciptakan persepsi dan pandangan tentang realitas yang dikonstruksikan oleh kata-kata dan tanda-tanda lain yang bisa digunakan dalam konteks komunikasi visual. Implikasi praktisnya adalah bagaimana tanda membentuk persepsi manusia, lebih dari sekedar merefleksikan realitas yang ada, karena tradisi semiotika sendiri melingkupi cakupan teori mengenai bagaimana tanda mewakili objek, ide, situasi, keadaan, perasaan, dan sebagainya. Dalam penelitian ini Miss Universe dan Miss World menjadi representasi penelitian, karena keduanya merupakan ajang kecantikan tertua di dunia.
