Abstract

Feminism strives for gender equality, including in the workplace. However, feminism is sometimes received with hostility, as feminist women are perceived as angry and man-haters, known as misandrists. This study aims to examine the role of outgroup meta-prejudice and ingroup meta-prejudice in mediating the relationship between hostile sexism and discrimination against feminist women. A total of 708 Indonesian citizens aged at least 18 years old (Mage = 26.38, SDage = 5.65) participated in a cross-sectional online survey. The results showed that hostile sexism did not directly predict discrimination against feminist women. Instead, the association between hostile sexism and discrimination against feminist women in the workplace takes place indirectly through ingroup meta-prejudice and outgroup metaprejudice. However, the association between hostile sexism and both mediators was found to be negative. These findings shed light on the role of meta-prejudice in the context of prejudice against feminists as advocate of traditional gender roles.

Feminisme memperjuangkan kesetaraan gender, termasuk di lingkungan kerja. Namun, usaha feminisme untuk melawan diskriminasi terhadap perempuan dapat berbuah bumerang, yakni stigma sosial yang menganggap bahwa perempuan feminis merupakan sosok yang pemarah dan membenci laki-laki, yang dikenal dengan istilah misandris. Studi ini berusaha menguji peran outgroup meta-prejudice dan ingroup meta-prejudice dalam memediasi hubungan antara hostile sexism dan diskriminasi kepada perempuan feminis. Menggunakan crosssectional survey secara daring, 708 Warga Negara Indonesia (WNI) berusia minimal 18 tahun (Musia = 26.38, SDusia = 5.65) berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa hostile sexism tidak memprediksi diskriminasi kepada perempuan feminis secara langsung. Asosiasi antara hostile sexism dan diskriminasi terhadap perempuan feminis terjadi secara tidak langsung melalui mediasi outgroup meta-prejudice dan ingroup meta-prejudice. Namun, asosiasi antara hostile sexism dengan kedua mediator terjadi secara negatif. Temuan ini memberikan gambaran mengenai peran meta-prejudice dalam konteks prasangka terhadap feminis sebagai advokat peran gender tradisional.
