Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the formation of self-concept in adults growing up in military families in Indonesia that practice authoritarian parenting. Moving away from a binary positive-negative perspective, this article argues that authoritarian parenting in the military context operates as a cultural reproduction, where military institutional values infiltrate the realm of family care at home and shape individual dispositions. Command culture then manifests as doxa, a system that naturalizes parental intervention and limits children's ability to make crucial life choices. Data collection for this article employed a qualitative method with a case study approach and triangulation process through interviews with participants who were biological children who grew up with parents working in the military. The purpose of this study is to examine a child's experiences and the meanings formed when exposed to authoritarian practices and their interpretations after experiencing numerous life transitions caused by other influences. A literature review was also used in this research to provide theoretical and empirical support for the interview results. The research findings indicate that self-concept is formed not through individual free reflexivity but rather through long-term habituation through parenting practices, a process that is continually negotiated through accepting what has been experienced, along with the accompanying inner turmoil. Ultimately, understanding parenting requires a relational perspective that views parenting style as a complex reflection of cultural dynamics, power relations, and the process of becoming human within a culture.
