Abstract

This article addresses the relationship between history and social action in the region of the former Sultanate of Wolio. To put it in a more precise way, the author seeks to demonstrate the multiple ways in which people in the region represent their past and to show how an understanding of history can be seen as a source of moral choices which guides social action. Landscape occupies a central place to examine how people represent their history. People visit certain historical sites not just for pleasure, but because past events and personalities related to these sites continue to exist in the same moral time as the living, just as they share the same physical space.
