Journal Policy

Open Access Policy

The journal promotes the dissemination of the high quality research by providing immediate open access. The open access of the journal means its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself.

Publication Policy

All manuscripts are subjected to double-blind review to maintain the high standard quality of the content. Author(s) are responsible to ensure that the submitted manuscript does not contain any identification of the author(s).

The journal does not charge any submission or processing fees for the author(s) to submit and publish their manuscripts in this journal.

The journal accepts manuscripts written in the English language. In order to ensure the readability and the quality of the journal, all manuscripts must go through a language editing and copy editing before publication.

The journal only accepts original manuscripts that have not been previously published nor being considered for publication elsewhere. All manuscripts submitted to the journal are subjected to similarity check procedure to identify any indication of plagiarism.

Peer Review Policy

The journal implements the peer review policy as a means to ensure the quality of the publication in the journal. The peer-review process consists of initial review, double-blind review, and the decision by the editor.

Initial Review: The editor evaluates the submitted manuscript to determine if the content is suitable for the journal. The manuscript is also subjected to a similarity check procedure using Ithenticate to identify any indication of plagiarism. Manuscripts with contents that are not suitable for the journal or with a high percentage of similarity (>15%) will be rejected.

Peer Review: Submitted manuscripts that have passed the initial review are subjected to double-blind review, where both authors and reviewers remain anonymous during the review process. A minimum of two reviewers are assigned to evaluate and provide the recommendation for a manuscript. In assigning the reviewers, the editor is responsible for avoiding conflict of interest during the review process.

Decision: The editor makes the final decision on the acceptability of a manuscript based on the comments and recommendations of the reviewers.

Artificial Intelligence Policy

This policy aims to provide clear and transparent guidance regarding the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies for authors, reviewers, and editors in the Interiority journal. The development of this policy is informed by the existing guidelines and policies from global publishers and organisations, including (but not limited to) Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE) Focus on Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence Policy advocated by SAGE and the policy on The Use of Generative AI and AI-assisted Technologies in Writing from Elsevier.

Generative AI refers to tools such as ChatGPT or DALL-E that produce content in the form of text, images, or translations. AI-assisted technologies refer to tools often already embedded in writing processing applications, including spell-checking in Microsoft Word and AI-powered writing applications, such as Grammarly. These tools provide suggestions, corrections, and improvements to self-authored content. The refined and improved contents produced with the help of such assisted technologies are considered ‘AI-assisted’ content. Interiority journal acknowledges the potential of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the process of developing content for publication, from writing to production processes, when used responsibly. However, AI tools must never be used to substitute human thinking and decision-making processes.

Policies for author(s)

Author(s) are responsible for ensuring that their submissions meet the standards of rigorous scholarship and research integrity. Author(s) must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in producing manuscript whenever applicable.

Author(s) should limit the use of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies solely to improve the manuscript’s readability, and should not use them to replace the key authoring tasks that require higher-order thinking, including literature analysis, data interpretation and drawing conclusions. AI should not be listed as an author or co-author and should not be included in the reference list.

When using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in producing data such as texts, figures, images, and artwork, the author(s) should properly outline how the uses are significantly a part of the manuscript’s research paradigm and research methodologies, with clear information on its reproducibility. The methods section should clarify the process, stating the name of the AI model or tool, version and extension numbers, and manufacturers. The author(s) should be aware of the risks that Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies may create incorrect, incomplete, or biased works, ensure that they are correctly used, and be responsible to avoid the occurrence of fabrication and plagiarism in the work produced.

For reviewers and editors(s)

The use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in reviewing and editorial processes should avoid any potential confidentiality and copyright issues.

Reviewer should limit the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies solely to improve readability and maintain accuracy of their reviews, and not to replace the evaluation and decision making process involved in the review process. Review reports using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies irresponsibly and inappropriately may not be considered in the final decision of the manuscript. The reviewers suspecting any potential use of an undisclosed or inappropriate use of generative AI in the works they review should indicate their concerns to the editor in charge.

Interiority editors do not use generative AI to summarise unpublished research or generate contents in the manuscript publication process, such as review invitations or decision letters. Editors may use AI-assisted technologies to improve the readability and language of their published content and to assist with the clerical tasks during the production process. Editors are responsible to ensure that the process is done with careful oversight, involcing thorough review by all parties involved in the editorial team.

If editors find or receive reports regarding the undisclosed and inappropriate use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the manuscripts, the investigation will be undertaken based on the guidance offered in this policy and our publication ethics policies.
