Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to explore the potential benefits of Tamanu or Nyamplung (Calophyllum Inophyllum) plant from economic, social, and environmental perspectives, particularly within the framework of Islamic economics. By examining its potential applications in halal industries, Green Waqf, and sustainable economic development, this research highlights how Tamanu cultivation aligns with Shariah principles, promotes ethical business practices, and supports social welfare through equitable resource distribution.

Design/methodology/approach - This study conducted a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed articles in the past decade (2013-2023). From several screening criteria, 48 articles indexed in Scopus were included for analysis.

Findings - Tamanu plant offers potential advantages across economic, social, and environmental aspects. From an economic perspective, it has economic value to be one of the raw materials for renewable energy that creates biofuels, ingredients, and goods that can be produced within the framework of the halal industry, such as pharmacy and cosmetics. In terms of the social dimension, it can support local community empowerment. From an environmental perspective, it can reduce emissions and aid in the restoration of degraded lands.

Implications - This research is expected to be among the main references for the Green Waqf Project. Substantial cooperation and collaboration are needed between stakeholders to optimize Tamanu’s potential benefits.

Originality/value - This is pioneer research that summarizes the potential benefits of Tamanu from economic, social, and economic perspectives while integrating it into the Green Waqf Project
