Abstract
Purpose - This study aims to analyze the impact of happiness and other factors such as attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, religious beliefs, and past behavior on the intention to donate money through a social or religious institution. This study is expected to contribute to understanding the psychological and sociocultural factors that drive donation intentions, particularly in social and religious contexts.
Design/methodology/approach - Primary data was collected through online questionnaire and analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). This research successfully collects data from 156 respondents who live in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area of Indonesia.
Findings - The analysis suggested that happiness has a positive influence on the behavioral intention to donate money through social/religious institutions in Indonesia. Attitude, perceived behavioral control, and past behavior also have a positive influence on the behavioral intention to donate money. On the other hand, subjective norms are not significantly affecting the intention to donate money. Additionally, religious beliefs have a positive influence on attitude about donation.
Implications – The findings offer practical implications for relevant stakeholders, particularly donors organizations, which include promoting the link between donating and well-being, developing creative programs to encourage public participation in donation, increasing trust through transparency, and improving services like payment systems and customer support that can increase intention to donate.
Originality/value - This study addresses the gap in the literature by examining the impact of happiness on behavioral intention in charitable giving, an area with limited research. It also uniquely combines the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and religiosity with the concept of happiness, which offers novel insights into how these social and religious factors interact to influence donation behaviors
