Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health issue that can affect the well-being of women, their families, and the child-rearing environment. Meanwhile, wasting in under-five children reflects acute malnutrition linked to food insecurity, infectious diseases, poverty, and access to healthcare services. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the prevalence of IPV among women in the past 12 months and the prevalence of wasting in children under the age of five at the national level. This study addresses the gap in cross-national research, which remains limited in linking IPV as an indicator of social vulnerability with wasting as an indicator of acute child malnutrition. This study employed a quantitative ecological cross-sectional design using country-level secondary data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health Observatory. Descriptive statistics, unadjusted bivariate Pearson correlation, simple linear regression, non-linear analysis, sensitivity analysis, and geospatial mapping were conducted. The results indicated a positive association between IPV and wasting, but this was weak and not statistically significant in the main model (r = 0.229, p = 0.144, β = 0.104, R² = 0.0526). The geospatial analysis identified countries with a high prevalence of both IPV and wasting, although the association between the two varied across countries. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of ecological, non-linear, and sensitivity analyses, along with geospatial risk classification of IPV–wasting. In conclusion, IPV is weakly associated with wasting at the country level, and these findings are exploratory rather than causal.
