Abstract

Parents' socioeconomic characteristics, including marital status, have been proven to impact children's education. Disruptions of a family structure due to the change of parental marital status might negatively affect the education performance of the children. In Indonesia, parental divorce is a rising phenomenon that might be a challenging factor for students’ performance. Applying education production function and individual data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2014, this study examines the relationship between family background characteristics, parental marital status, and children's educational performance, proxied by cognitive scores, in Indonesia. This study found that children with separate parents in the previous period have significantly lower current education performance than those with intact parents. This finding suggests that children with separated parents need to be supported by other factors, such as school inputs, to offset the negative impact of parental separation on their educational performance.

Bahasa Abstract
