Tourism Policy and Economic Growth in Indonesia: A Political Economy Analysis

Abstract

This study examines the political economy dimensions of tourism policy and its impact on economic growth in Indonesia from 2010 to 2024. Using a mixed-method approach combining quantitative analysis of tourism statistics and qualitative policy document analysis, the research reveals that tourism policies are significantly influenced by political interests and institutional arrangements. The findings indicate that coordinated policy interventions have positively contributed to tourism growth, with foreign tourist arrivals increasing from 7 million to 16 million during the study period. However, policy effectiveness is constrained by inter-governmental coordination challenges and rent-seeking behaviors. This study contributes to understanding the political economy factors that shape tourism development in emerging economies.
