Abstract

This article discusses the domestic violence portrayed in Guy de Maupassant's short story La Confidence. The story centers on Marquise de Rennedou, who recounts to her friend, Baroness de Grangerie, her revenge for her husband's harsh treatment. The purpose of this study is to explain the depiction of patriarchal normalization that causes domestic violence, as viewed through the concept of power represented in La Confidence, along with the characters' efforts to resist such violence. This research employs a qualitative methodology using A.J. Greimas’s structural analysis theory, based on the actantial and functional schemes. The actantial scheme helps identify the functions and roles of characters and their relationships, while the functional scheme divides the plot to understand how the sequence of events influences the core of the short story related to the topic. Additionally, Michel Foucault's power relations theory is applied to examine how patriarchal societal norms influence men's behavior in the household, potentially leading to violence. The analysis ultimately reveals that the normalization of patriarchy in society, which elevates men's status, can be a cause of domestic violence, as illustrated in La Confidence.

Bahasa Abstract

Artikel ini membahas tentang kekerasan dalam rumah tangga yang dilakukan seorang suami kepada istrinya dalam cerpen La Confidence karya Guy de Maupassant. Cerpen ini berkisah tentang Marquise de Rennedou yang bercerita kepada temannya yaitu Baroness de Grangerie, mengenai pembalasan dendamnya atas perlakuan kasar suaminya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan penggambaran normalisasi patriarki yang menyebabkan kekerasan dalam rumah tangga yang dilihat dari pendekatan konsep kekuasaan yang terepresentasi pada cerpen La Confidence beserta upaya perlawanan tokoh terhadap kekerasan tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan teori analisis struktural dari A.J. Greimas berdasarkan bagan skema aktan dan skema fungsional. Skema aktan yang berguna untuk melihat fungsi dan peran tokoh serta hubungan timbal balik antar tokoh dalam cerita dan skema fungsional yang berguna untuk membagi-bagi alur untuk lebih memahami bagaimana urutan peristiwa yang berpengaruh terhadap inti cerita cerpen yang berkaitan dengan topik. Selanjutnya dalam membahas mengenai topik kekerasan dalam rumah tangga yang terjadi akan dikaitkan dengan teori relasi kuasa Michel Foucault untuk menggugat pengaruh masyarakat patriarki terhadap praktik sosial laki-laki dalam rumah tangga yang bisa menghasilkan perilaku kekerasan. Hasil analisis pada akhirnya memperlihatkan bahwa normalisasi patriarki dalam masyarakat yang meninggikan status laki-laki di masyarakat dapat menjadi penyebab terjadinya kekerasan dalam rumah tangga seperti dalam cerpen La Confidence.
