Abstract

This study examines the generation of theoretical and practical knowledge in the evolution of design frameworks. Current discourse views design practice as an intuitive process rather than a knowledge-driven one. This study argues that theory as design knowledge informs practice, and knowledge generated from a reflective design practice informs possibilities of theoretical propositions. This article focuses on examining the flows of knowledge that underlines the evolution of pattern-based, force-based, and concept-based design frameworks within the architectural discourses from the year 1400 to 2020. Rather than focusing on the duality of theory and practice in architectural knowledge, the study emphasises the different generations and appropriations of knowledge emerging from the dialectical relations between theory and practice. Alteration of subsequent practice informed by such knowledge reflects a dynamic evolution of the design frameworks. By mapping the evolution of design frameworks in architectural discourses over time, the study contributes to establishing how design frameworks are grounded in theoretical and practical thinking to adaptively produce knowledgeable designs.

Author Biography

Resza Riskiyanto
Resza Riskiyanto has been a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, since 2012. He earned his doctoral degree in Architecture from Universitas Indonesia, with a research focus on design methods, particularly tectonics and materiality in architecture. His academic work emphasizes the exploration of the relationship between construction, material expression, and the design process as integral components of contemporary architectural practice.

In addition to his academic career, Resza is also an active architectural practitioner, adopting a critical regionalism approach that integrates research-based processes (design by research) into his design practice. This approach allows him to engage with local contexts in a reflective manner while maintaining relevance within global architectural discourse.

Beyond teaching and professional practice, he is also involved in the development of the architect profession. He is a member of the Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI), contributing to the advancement of knowledge, research, and professional practice in architecture through various institutional and scholarly activities.

Arnis Rochma Harani
Arnis Rochma Harani is a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro since 2013. She teaches urban design, interior design and introduction to architecture, in addition to coordinating first-year architectural design studio at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro. She completed her Bachelor and Master degrees from Universitas Diponegoro, and her Doctoral degrees from Universitas Indonesia. Her current research focuses on local spatial practices in urban contexts, understanding the relationship between humans and their living environment. She focuses on research-based design that explores urban space using the perspective of interiority as a fundamental concept. She has involved in various research and community service projects in collaboration with government, institutions, and stakeholders aimed at community empowerment.
