Abstract
Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent the primary cause of mortality globally. The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) can predict the risk of CVD more accurately than other indices. Hospital workers are at risk of developing CVD. There are several factors that can influence the AIP. No studies have specifically investigated these associations in Indonesia, particularly regarding the AIP in hospital workers. This study aims to determine factors associated with the AIP among workers at a national respiratory hospital in Jakarta.
Methods This cross-sectional study collects data from the medical check-up records of workers at Persahabatan Hospital in 2024, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. SPSS was used to perform the analysis, applying the Mann-Whitney U test, with statistical significance determined at p <0.05 and a 95% confidence interval.
Results The study involved 392 hospital workers. The median age was 38 years (range 20-64) and most workers were female (70.92%). Most workers had a low risk of cardiovascular disease (79.34%) based on the AIP. Gender, type of workforce, BMI, blood pressure and smoking habits showed statistically significant differences with the AIP (p <0.001).
Discussion The predominance of low-risk AIP values may reflect a healthy worker effect, supported by routine annual medical check-ups, workplace access to health services, and the relatively young, mostly female, and non-smoking profile of the participants. Although obesity and elevated blood pressure were common, these institutional and demographic factors may have temporarily buffered lipid-related cardiovascular risk, highlighting the importance of continued workplace wellness and longitudinal monitoring.
Conclusion Factors associated with the AIP include gender, type of workforce, BMI, blood pressure and smoking habits.
